Top of the ladder
Publication date: 2013
“This report brings together the evidence regarding the UK’s ‘next housing crisis’ – the chronic under supply of appropriate housing for older people. While all eyes are on those struggling to get on the bottom of the property ladder, those at the top are often trapped in homes that are too big and unmanageable.
They struggle to compete with first time buyers (supported by Help to Buy and other initiatives) for small properties currently in the
market – nor would they necessarily want to.
A lack of choice of suitable homes to downsize into is having a negative effect… as 85 per cent of larger family homes owned by older people only become available when someone dies.” (Extract from Executive summary).
