Case study 9: Accessible cashiers desks

Publication date: 2018
Ranking: useful

To meet the needs of both staff and customers, cashiers at Sheffield City Council helped design the cashiers desks for the then brand new Howden House offices.

The staff behind the desk wanted to be seated, but at the eye level of ambulant standing customers, but the desk had to also meet the needs of wheelchair users. A familiar story. They also needed to have an ergonomically designed layout to be able to carry out the repeated transactions of taking payments, operating a till and using a printer, etc.

At the time there was nothing on the market that would fulfil this brief.

They constructed a cardboard mockup and tried out different configurations. This was then presented to the design team who used it to prepare drawings which were manufactured by the security company who produced the final design. The process allowed the cashiers to try out ideas in a simple and effective way without having to have drawing skills and also to give their ideas a reality check.
