Designing for Diversity
Welcome to the home of physical access design guidance.
Our website provides design guidance to meet the needs of a range of equality groups with the aim of providing a truly inclusive built environment.
The site offers a range of technical guidance and primarily UK government policy. It also includes research papers and comment from design professionals and importantly, the people using these their designs.
50 years since Stonewall riots
The annual Pride celebrations and acknowledgement of the LGBT community are even more poignant this year as they mark 50 years since the riots which started in the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village area of Manhattan, New York. The Stonewall riots occurred on 28 June 1969.
The events lead to the start of the LGBT liberation movement and was a catalyst for the LGBT political activism that we see today. The History website has more information about the riots. Stonewall UK is also celebrating its 30th year; created in 1989 by a small group of people who had been active in the campaign to repeal section 28 of the Local Government Act, which prohibited the so-called ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in schools as well as stigmatising the LGBT community.
